The market continues to decline

After sales fell 13% in July and 18% in August, the domestic car market continued to decline in September

After sales fell 13% in July and 18% in August, the domestic car market continued to decline in September with no sign of brakes with sales decreasing by 17% over the same period in 2009.

As reported by the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (VAMA), all 17 automobile joint ventures could sell only 9,141 vehicles. All 3 types of cars - MPVs, sedans, commercial - fell respectively 19%, 21% and 14%.

Among the giants in the field of passenger cars manufacturing and assembly, Truong Hai was the only one to maintain its status with sales volume reaching 2,190 units, an increase of 21% over the same period last year. Despite taking the top position of VAMA with 2,629 units, Toyota still suffered from the decline trend of the market with 6% decrease in sales. GM Daewoo could sell only 648 units in the past month, a fall of down to 845 units (approximately -57%) over the same period last year.

Of the best-selling cars in September 2010, Innova, with nearly 600 units sold, have regained the top position from Vios in August and Fortuner in July. However, as observed by Autonet, the leading position of Innova in September also seemed insecure as the sales of this leading MPV could not make a breakthrough in order leave others way behind like it did in its peak months about two years ago.

Cars of Kia brand continued their momentum of good sales in recent months when still present in 3 positions of 3 different segments in Top 10 best-selling cars, which were Morning at the 5th with 267 units, Carens at the 7th  with 257 units and Cerato at the 9th with 198 sold not including the sales of Koup version. With the advantage of cheap price and new eye-catching design features, these three models were consecutively stayed in the chart of top 10 best selling cars in recent months.

Regarding cumulative sales through September 2010, the entire VAMA joint-ventures reached 78,179 vehicles, decreasing by 3% over the same period last year, among which, sedan models increased by 6%, while commercial vehicles decreased by 2% and MPVs fell by 14%.

Leading positions in the chart of 9 months cumulative sales still belonged to familiar names like Toyota, Truong Hai and Vinamotor, in which, only two top positions accounted for 50% of the total car consumption of the entire VAMA (with 39,218 units).
